All progressive mankind already knows that there are film cameras – a dying technology, and there are digital cameras – a new, digital era. What is digital photography? First, let’s try to find out what digital photography is.

What is digital photography in simple words?

What is Digital Photography?

In the simplest language, digital technologies include everything related to electronic computing and data conversion: gadgets, electronic devices, technologies, programs. Compared to analogue technologies, digital technologies are better suited for storing and transferring large amounts of data, and provide high-speed computing. In this case, information is transmitted as accurately as possible, without distortion.

What is meant by digital photograph?

There are various definitions of digital photography in the literature:

  •       it is a photography technology that uses, instead of light-sensitive materials based on silver halide, the conversion of light by a light-sensitive matrix and obtaining a digital file used for further processing and printing;
  •       this is the process of obtaining and storing an image, which occurs with the help of the movement of electric charges (usually as a result of the photoelectric effect and during further processing), but no chemical reactions or movement of matter occurs;
  •       an image captured with a digital camera is called digital photography.

The term digital photography, however, also refers to a scanned analog image. Since the processing of the resulting image files is performed on a computer (or other digital equipment), digital photography often belongs to the field of information technology.

Let’s compare photography and digital photography

Considering that the overwhelming majority of modern amateur photographers start their photography journey with a smartphone, buying a camera is almost always seen as the next step in creative development. No matter how good the cameras of modern smartphones are, they have a number of significant limitations:

  1.       Low light quality.
  2.       The inability to somehow influence the result – everything is done automatically with very rare exceptions.
  3.       If you want to shoot close-ups with good quality.
  4.     If you would like to have a beautiful blur in the out-of-focus area.

The quality of photographs is primarily affected not by the matrix, but by the lens, so the problem of choosing a camera cannot be considered apart from buying a lens. By default, the camera is equipped with a simple complete zoom lens, which, in principle, allows you to get photos of acceptable quality. Still, a “whale” lens is almost always a “bottleneck” that does not allow the camera to reach its full potential, thereby making it difficult to shoot creatively.What is Digital Photography?
